I enjoyed this book because it was so different from what I usually read. It is a science fiction dystopian book. Of course, the whole virus thing was a little too close for comfort with what is going on in the world right now.

Cinder is a courageous cyborg that is determined to get away from... Read More »

I love to recommend this series to teens. Who doesn't love a retelling of Cinderella with a cyborg main character? The stepmother is infuriating and horrible, the story is creative, the main character level headed, intelligent and capable AND she's got a leatherman kit in her calf. Can't beat... Read More »

Cinder, by Marissa Meyer, is an amazing first book in the Lunar Chronicles, starting the series off with a new take on the classic Cinderella fairytale. In the book, Lunars live on the moon, and humans and cyborgs live on earth. As a deadly virus sweeps Earth the vaccines are only tested on cyborgs killing many. The main character, Cinder, is a cyborg and a gifted mechanic, known throughout New Beijing. One day her fellow protagonist needs repairs done, and Cinder accidentally learns top-secret information on the dead Lunar princess. The book is written in the third person, allowing the reader to easily see what the characters are thinking. Cinder fits into many genres, but I believe the main two to be science fiction and fantasy with an underlying theme of discrimination, with the anti-cyborg prejudice. The book is very well-crafted, and I would recommend this book to middle grade and young adult readers. Overall this book is a beautiful blend of an old story, rewritten in a modern futuristic world. The book leaves many loose ends and unanswered questions for smooth flow into the next book in the series.

I didn't enjoy it that much... I couldn't get through the first 100 pages... I wanted to like it but I just didn't.

Cinder, by Marissa Meyer, is a futuristic spin on the classic fairytale, Cinderella. The plot follows Cinder, a talented mechanic, who is the family outcast due to her identity as a cyborg. A deadly plague is ravaging her world, and everyone is anxious for a cure. But the Lunars, the race that lives on the moon, are watching their every move and will do whatever it takes to overthrow Earth. Cinder must uncover the secrets of her existence in order to save Earth from the plague, and discover her real identity. This novel has elements of sci-fi and dystopia, as well as adventure, mystery, and fantasy. I would definitely recommend this book, because the unexpected plot twists and exciting events keep the reader hooked and eager to find out more.

This book is not like your ordinary fairy tale. Instead, it is a unique version of a Cinderella Story that takes place in a futuristic setting. There are components that make it seem that it is a Cinderella Story such as the mean sisters, the ball, and the hardworking main character, but the main character named Linh Cinder in the story is a hardworking half-human and half-andriod. The story is about Cinder who encounters a deadly plague, where everyone is desperately looking for a cure. Not only that, there is another race called the Lunars who are also involved. There is some romance in the story, which is suggested from the story that is based on a fairy tale. This book is the first book out of the Lunar Series and a great way to start off the series, as it hooks the readers, especially the people who are interested in romance but in a different way. I love this series and was glad that it was recommended by a friend. This book would be in my top five favorites due to its subtle romance and amazing plot. There are no complaints from me and will always read this book again. I love the inspiration that the author received, and she made it her own. Her creativity and originality really stands out in the series.

I'm a bit late to the party on this series but I am thoroughly enjoying these fairy tale-outer space mashup vibes.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer is the first in the fantasy/dystopian series The Lunar Chronicles. It follows Cinder, a gifted mechanic and cyborg, who is blamed for her stepsister’s death by the plague that is spreading in her world. In addition, the Lunars, ruthless space people, are watching their country’s every move. But what Cinder doesn’t know is that her past is the key to saving her people from the Lunars and the plague. This series has elements of fantasy, dystopia, romance and a little bit of a mystery thrown in the mix. I love the characters and the fact that it is a fairytale retelling.

I really liked the idea that Cinderella (or in this case, Cinder) being a cyborg mechanic. I enjoyed this book very much.

This was a great book! I could not stop reading it. Non- stop action, engaging dialogue, and fantastic characters. I have been hesitant to read it because I really hate cyborg books, but surprisingly, I love it! I normally hate it when humans are son connected electronically. They feel less human (which they are) so I have trouble relating to them and seeing them as real people. But this book pulled it off wonderfully, even from a third person perspective! And, yes, the 'plot twists' were so obvious. You can see them from a mile off. (Spoilers coming up! You have been Warned!) For instance, at the beginning of the book, Cinder mentions the lunar princess gone missing. It was phrased so plainly that I knew immediately that it was her. It became more and more obvious as the book went on, but that actually got me more interested. The final scene at the end was not surprising in any way like I think it was intended, but it was long-awaited. Fantastic read for someone who was not expecting to like it. Read it all in a day I got so invested.

Age 12 and up

Cinder is a sci-fi retelling of Cinderella. It takes place in the future version of Beijing, told from the point of the mechanic cyborg, Cinder. As she is forced to learn the secrets of her past, she begins to be thrust into a whole different world of politics, with the fate of the world on her shoulders. I read this book when I first got into reading and it totally blew me away. I'd loved the story, and even to this day think it is very unique. The whole series is interconnected and manages to have the perfect balance of keeping the fairytale, but not making it the same story at all. In fact, while the author does use elements from the original fairytale, she manages to make it a completely different aspect to the story. If you liked the big cast in Six of Crows, The Lunar Chronicles is another great example of a big cast that was executed well. All the friendships and relationships, despite the difference of each character, throughout the story make it more real. However, even as this book may bring me a lot of good memories and nostalgia, I must admit a few flaws about it. For one thing, I think the first 2 books had a bit of slow pacing. I'd especially didn't really enjoyed the second book, because I felt like some things were a bit instant, but as soon as the third book came, it really did improve. I loved the third book and fourth book quite a bit. The first book was also good to me, but the third and fourth really have that something.
