This book has now been longlisted for the Dublin IMPAC prize as well.
It is a wonderful read by a very talented young writer.

A woman with Huntington's disease seeks an answer to a question that her father, who died of Huntington's, never got an answer for. Namely, how does one deal with certain defeat? Her quest takes her to modern day Russia and into the life of a chess master turned politician. The prose is gorgeous and the story compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.
