After thoroughly despising the 4th book in this series, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the first installment, "The Raven Boys". Set in a small Virginia town with an exclusive prep school, "The Raven Boys" is a sure pleasure for those intrigued by occult, magical pathways and ancient Celtic kings!

I tried to read this book on paper and I just couldn't, but I really loved the idea and I wanted to read the entire book so I listened to it as a play-way. This book series is by far the best audiobooks iv'e ever listened to. I read through all of the books this way and these are now some of my favourite books of all time. I suggest them to anyone who likes magic and friendship and adventure, they are just so so so fun. I got really caught up in the stories and ended up spending many days just lying down on my couch listening to them. A MUST READ!!

quietnight says "Will Patton is a god amongst us. When I first hit Play on Raven Boys, I was like, wtf??? because it didn't sound like any southern accent I was familiar with. But I am now a true believer. The way you can totally tell the diff even between Adam and his father! And then to hear him switch over into that country English one he does for the professor! The man is a genius."

Characters: 10/10
Plot: 8/10
Writing: 10/10
I love Stiefvater's writing style. She has so many memorable images and metaphors--"If it had a social security number, he'd argued with it," "shark-nosed car," "the smudgy one," etc.
Adam is BAE.
I loved how all of the plots wove together at the end. It was so satisfying--and yet there were so many unanswered questions. I immediately leaped into book 2.

Will Patton infuses Stiefvater's rich, descriptive writing with life. He brings the characters and sense of place to you in a way that will haunt you. As I started this story, I thought here we go another predictable love story. But, what I got was a intriguing story that twisted and turned in ways I didn't see coming. It's more a story of friendship than love. Once I reached the end of this book, I had to move straight into the next book, because I wasn't ready for this tale to end.

GAAAH! I hate the narrator! It ruined this book for me. I don't even want to read the next one. :(

The style and tension were amazing! The bits of humor, impeccable and unexpected! And the characters were beautiful and alive. However, I had expected more from the ending. Lacking the sense that there was too much to contain in one book, I felt the book left some important promises unfulfilled. Despite this, I did thoroughly enjoy the book and can't wait to pick up the sequel.

I suddenly find myself wishing this book wasn't so popular so I could more easily get my hands on a copy (since there's a waiting list for all of our library copies that are currently checked out). I listened to the excellent audiobook production, but now I want to page back through the actual book to reread and review some sections; partly to re-experience details that I didn't hold onto well enough during my listening and partly to help me decide if I want to give this four or five stars. As it is, I'll call it a four-and-a-half rounded up. --- I don't remember what summary description I read about the book before I started reading it or just what that blurb said, but I remember I had two responses: 1) I didn't find it particularly remarkable and wasn't all that intrigued by the book's plot description; and 2) that didn't really matter to me since I'd felt the same way about The Scorpio Races yet had thoroughly enjoyed that title, along with the fact that readers I trust were recommending this one. So I decided to give it a chance and jumped in with both feet, finding myself quickly swept away. --- I was a little worried when, right up front, I learned there was a paranormal element and, it seemed, a strongly foreshadowed romance--worried it might just be another of the formulaic paranormal romances that are so common these days--but I decided to trust Stiefvater. My trust was well placed. No hacked or cliched formulas resulted; at least, not as obvious constraints on the excellent plot and character development. And it was the characters that really drew me in and won me over, for there is a large cast of complex, well-developed, interesting protagonists, and the story doesn't hinge on a single person or romantic interest. I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with each one of them. --- I also enjoyed the obviously researched paranormal angle, psychics and ley lines and spirits and Welsh legends. It had the heft and weight of history behind it. --- My biggest hesitation was that the climax and resolution didn't feel quite natural for the characters and plot, but a bit manipulated to work as simply a step in an ongoing series--it wasn't that things are left unresolved, but what is resolved and how it happens in an attempt to walk the tightrope between finishing this story and leaving things open for the next. --- Still, I'll definitely be reading that next one when it appears.

Oh my god. Will Patton is the most amazing reader. There is no reason to experience this book any other way. Period.
