Sometimes, throwing subtlety out the window actually works in social commentary. They Live is an example of this.

Second best John Carpenter film I have seen. Best is The Thing.

Tell-tale movie. This is fiction?...REALLY😊!

A fantastic film, with a well-deserved cult following that seems to grow larger every year as this dark sci-fi satire proves itself relevant over and over again. Rowdy Roddy Piper and Keith David star as construction workers in a struggling economy who uncover a plot among the world's elites to use the media to manipulate the masses into obedience as they exploit them for all they're worth. It's one of John Carpenter's (Halloween, The Thing) more "b-movie"-feeling affairs, but even if some audiences might find it dated and goofy in moments, all will cherish the famous fight scene between Piper and David. Highly recommended for fans of 80s movies, sci-fi, horror, and/or satire.

John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors. When I first saw this movie in 1988, I thought it was campy and cheesy, but after seeing it again a few days ago, I was surprised by all the eye-opening social parallels we are facing today, so much so that this movie seems almost like a prophecy for the modern day.

Interesting but not the greatest. This movie had potential to be better though.

As relevant (and disturbing) today as when it came out in 1988, when I first watched it.

" They live, we sleep ". It might seem like a silly action/sci-fi B-Movie from the 80's, but John Carpenter slyly subverts the genre with a radical critique of those who truly wield power in the USA. As this film was a return to low-budget filmmaking for Carpenter, he utilized those factors in his favor, mixing goofiness with a profundity that would pass over most viewers heads. The 5 minute fight scene is a good indicator whether you'll " get it ".
There are some amazingly perceptive comments made by the underground radio broadcaster in the film ( keep your ears tuned ). It's a fun and insightful film that still holds up.
