This is the story about the youth of India today. A young London based film-maker comes upon the diaries of her grandfather, who served in the British police force in India during the freedom struggle. She plans to shoot a film based on the diaries and casts a group of friends to play the roles of the revolutionaries described in the diaries. The friends cannot identify with the characters and would rather enjoy today's life than get involved in a project that seems like the stuff of textbooks.

A message movie, with mixed results .... mainly for niggling details, like an English girl who promptly learns flawless Hindi?? Really? And ups herself to India to make a film, and funding is no problem? While I can guess she was just lucky to experience absolutely no difficulty along the lines of racism, anti-imperialism, or sexism, can you believe that a fair-haired girl can go bare-shouldered all day long and not get a sunburn?

OK, OK, forget all that: there are plenty of agreeably good scenes, if you can accept that 40-year-old Aamir Khan is a college student. The message is good, the film is entertaining. These departures from reality dilute the power for me, but maybe not for you.

Great film about two groups of very different people, almost a century apart, who try to make their country a better place. The film felt particularly relevant these days with the recent massive protests against corruption all over India.
