On the eve of Princess Sophia's wedding the Scandinavian city of Skyggehavn prepares to fete the occasion with a sumptuous display of riches. Yet beneath the veneer of celebration, a shiver of darkness creeps through the palace halls. A mysterious illness plagues the royal family, threatening the lives of the throne's heirs, and a courtier's wolfish hunger for the king's favors sets a devious plot in motion. In the palace at Skyggehave, things are seldom as they seem -- and when a single errant prick of a needle sets off a series of events that will alter the course of history, the fates of seamstress Ava Bingen and mute nursemaid Midi Sorte become irrevocably intertwined.

If you're expecting a kingdom where justice rules and everyone has a merry time in a nice Scandinavian city nestled between mountains...it is best if you skip this one. The Kingdom of Little wounds aka Kingdom of life-long trials, hardships and sorrows has manipulation, treachery, betrayal, hardships that never seem to end, and everyday injustice and cruelty. Regardless of how nasty everything was back then it was pretty close to what I thought of how law, justice and honor was seen in a monarchy. Basically, if you're in good favor with the royal family, you can reach the highest of status, no matter how strange, or how unlikely it is. Yet be careful, for the most powerful in appearance does not mean they are in actuality. It also shows that life is just one hardship after another. For most of the book, I felt like Anna who just wanted one moment of happiness, one moment where she can be happy, where shes not being used and manipulated. Hope is but an illusion for these characters and some realize that early in their lives while others, like Anna, crave for it till much later. You wonder which is better for your mind and soul, to be hopeless forever and or to be hopeful and then watch as it is crushed every. single. time. its up to the readers imagination whether they choose to believe the hope that is provided at the ending. I'm just glad I'm living in the 21st century.

I found the book to be gruesome and wonderfully written.I like this book.
