Add a CommentThis is the last book - and the worst - of the Miss Fisher mysteries. I love Miss Fisher and her cast of characters but this book was actually boring. I mean, I bypassed whole chunks of the music related stuff that took up quite a bit of the book like it was just filler. Throw in an egregious, far-fetched and gratuitous sex scene and the Miss Fisher series ends with a whimper.
****Spoiler Alert*** On Kerry Greenwood's Facebook page as of late fall 2019 she said she was in the process of writing another Miss Fisher book!
Excellent book, couldn't figure out the killer till the reveal. Outstanding.
(Book 20 in the Phryne Fisher series)
Probably not quite the book for everyone. In fact, I've begun to see that, while there's a mystery in there somewhere and the characters I like, much of it is filler: costume change, what the characters are eating for every meal, what alcoholic drinks they're consuming, and sex-capades. I find that I can easily read one of them in a couple hours, sometimes even less, if I skip the filler which adds nothing to my understanding of the plot. The TV series are much better, because they show you the costumes, eliminate much of the eating--thank God, since I usually end up eating more myself when I read the books--and keep one focused on the details of the mystery. Usually a book allows for more side plots, but these tend to add words rather than substance.
I loved this book as much as all the other Ms. Fisher novels. I was interested in the makeup and organization of a choral group. This is yet another winner as far as I'm concerned,
I thought I would never finish this book😩. If this was the first book of Greenwood's I ever read it would also be my last!!
I thought this was tedious (i.e., boring) as well. Not only does she go on and on about gay, gay, gay, but then there is the choir, and all that goes with it, ad nauseum, to the point you find yourself skipping here and there. I think it would be smart to skip this book altogether.
The story is extremely tedious, but Greenwood spends a great deal of time defending gay relationships. Having "gay" characters in a novel is one thing, but she even discusses Bible passages and totally distorts what the Bible teaches and misrepresents the meaning of Greek words.
Always enjoyable. I'm a fan.
Homosexuals and their particular sex needs predominates this book and Greenwood leaves nothing to the imagination as to their interactions. Greenwood is even explicit in the scene where a male gay examines Phryne’s naked body in the tiniest detail as she examines his naked body in front of his lover with vivid descriptions. The book does have a ‘who done it’ that keeps you guessing until the end, but I was really disappointed that she included so much pornography.
