From Academy Award winning director John Schlesinger comes a brilliantly witty film. Starring Kate Beckinsale (Pearl Harbor) as Flora Poste, a London society girl, and Joanna Lumley (Absolutely Fabulous) as Flora's friend and mentor, this heartwarming comedy is full of charm and clever satire. Recently orphaned, Flora ignores the sage advice of Mrs. Smiley (Joanna Lumley) and moves to the country to live on a decrepit farm with her eccentric relatives. Fancying herself a writer, Flora encounters perfect material for her novel in the humorously odd collection of rural characters. In her own inimitable way, Flora insists on creating order out of their chaos, and in the process, she fills their lives with light and laughter. Also starring Rufus Sewell (A Knight's Tale), Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings), Stephen Fry (Peter's Friends) and Eileen Atkins.

A quirky and witty movie that was lots of fun to watch. Good characters too. Some will "get" the movie, some won't. If you like English period movies, you'll find this one fun and fresh.

A comedy on a perky quirky tour de force change agent came upon "Cold Comfort Farm," ready or not. Some LOL moments and deft florid dialogues that do not offend anyone. ... the fire-and-brimstone preacher was terrifyingly good!

Too quirky for me. I'll try it again later, but next time with a bottle of wine.

A quirky movie that is a great fit for Anglophiles who like goofy, off-beat humorous films. Also a treat for fans of Absolutely Fabulous with the great Joanna Lumley playing a distinctly-non Patsy-like character.

"Robert Post's Child" descends on her eccentric relatives and literally cleans house. Based on a satirical novel by Stella Gibbons, this oddball comedy features a lot of recognizable British actors (including Gandalf as an over-zealous preacher!).

Ive never seen this but being British wit, this movie may be worth a watch.

Cute and fun British comedy. Well thought out and wonderfully acted. If you are a fan of Brit humor (not in a Monte Python sort of way) you should give this a watch.

Brilliant satire. Read the book if you don't 'get it'.

A puzzling and bizarre movie that did not seem to be about anything nor did it seem to go anywhere. There was some pap about opening up people's lives but seemed more about the "power-over" manipulations of a do-gooding outsider. Weak, insipid, pointless, not funny, not interesting. A waste of Kate Bekinsale's talents but what would one expect of a movie with Joanna Lumley in it?

But didn't see these -
Letter to Robert Poste's child:
"I've expected to hear from Robert Poste's child these 20 years. Child, my man once did your father a great wrong. If you'll come here, I'll do my best to atone. But never ask what for. My lips are sealed. "We're not like other folk maybe, but there have always been Starkadders... at Cold Comfort Farm. And we will do our best to welcome Robert Poste's child.... Child, child, if you come to this doomed house, what is there to save you?
Your cousin,
Judith Starkadder. "

The something in the woodshed myth:
I saw something nasty in the woodshed.
-Did you? What?
I don't remember anymore. I was little. Something terrible! And it was in the woodshed?
-Are you sure?
Course I'm sure.
-Or maybe the potting shed. Or the bicycle shed. Or the tool shed. All these years, getting five good meals a day, running the farm, ruling the roost, everyone doing... exactly as you say and
sacrificing their lives to yours? That's not bad, is it, just for seeing something nasty in the woodshed?
Everything depends on me.
-Does it?
...
No! I forbid it! ... I saw something nasty in the woodshed.
-Sure, you did, but did it see you, baby?
