Home from a two-year assignment in the British Virgin Islands, Inspector Robert Lewis, protégé of the legendary Inspector Morse, returns to Oxford, England in the series pilot, where he is teamed with a brilliant new partner, Detective Sergeant James Hathaway. Lewis barely makes it out of the airport before falling into his first murder investigation. But even if he solves the case, will his new boss still move him from the front lines to a training assignment? Next, Lewis and Hathaway return to the streets of Cambridge and the halls of Oxford University with three more mysteries to unravel. In Whom the gods would destroy, Detectives Lewis and Hathaway are thrown into a delicate murder case that implicates one of Oxford University's most prominent figures when an old classmate of his is found dead. In Old school ties, Lewis comes face to face with his past when the murder of bright young Jo Gilchrist pulls Lewis and Hathaway into a case driven by celebrity, scheming, and dangerous sexual politics. In Expiation, when a North Oxford housewife is found hanged, it appears to be an open and shut case of suicide. But the lack of a suicide note and the victim's seemingly perfect life leads Lewis to suspect foul play.

Hoacornell. Please note the series is set in Oxford/Cambridge, not London. You're seeing a higher education center that's been around since the 10th (or earlier) century. Amazing.
Love this series. Most plots twist and turn admirably. Reliable performances as we expect from PBS series. I have a secret crush on Hathaway. Interesting note, in the "Endeavour" series about the young Morse, Hathaway's father, Phillip, is encountered in a an installment. Clever, these writers.

Inspector Lewis is a fabulous series from public television. This British series is both amazing and suspenseful. We watched it and felt we were seeing parts of Oxford/Cambridge (corrected 2/12/18) that we would have never have had a chance to see. There is so much history when you see a series like Inspector Lewis. As a detective, he ranks at the top with us!

Funny that I got into this entire series more than Inspector Morse because it was more recent & Inspector Lewis had fewer quirks & more the everyman than Morse.

A valiant attempt to fill Morse's shoes. It's OK, but not great.

These episodes are good. Unfortunately some library's users were CARELESS in HANDLING these DVDs making a few deep scratches. It seems hard objects (steel knives?) were the DVD-killers' weapon. Could Inspector Lewis solve this crime and bring the guilty party (or parties) to justice?

stick with it. or, skip over the first season entirely. TRUST me, second season is leaps better. and the following seasons as well...

This has quickly become a favorite series of mine, a stand out among the many contemporary British mystery series currently available. The mysteries are well-constructed and surprising, and fans of Morse and Endeavour will appreciate the way this series ties into the rest of the canon. Lewis is a refreshingly normal detective, without any particular quirks, baggage, or superhuman abilities. Lewis and Hathaway make a fabulous team, with Hathaway offering a touch of broodiness to balance Lewis's conventionality. There's great moments of humor in the writing, and the supporting cast, especially the female police chief and police doctor, turn in great performances as well. It's a good balance between light and dark - it won't drag you down, but it also takes death seriously.

My only negative comment on this series is that this particular video from England does not have sub-titles and also seems to be a bit slow paced in it's style. I realize there are many fans of this English investigator, but we could not get past the dialects. The BBC/Masterpiece Theatre presentations shown with Acorn subtitles are a key for us when checking these out at the Tulsa Library.

Liked Morse and Lewis as a team but I love Lewis and Hathaway. Lots of twists in the mysteries. Laurence Fox as Hathaway I can watch over and over again.
