Emma Cross wades into a very confused set of circumstances when a psychic is murdered at her Aunt Alva's garden party and her cousin, Consuelo Vanderbilt, disappears shortly thereafter. Historically, the newspapers of the time made much of Consuelo's "forced" marriage to the Duke of Marlborough, and Alyssa Maxwell's attempt to graft a mystery onto the scandal (Consuelo was believed to be held hostage by her ruthless mother, Alva) is not very successful, mostly due to unnecessarily large number of red herrings flooding the plot line.
