This is an American drama directed by Delbert Mann, based on two one-act plays by Terence Rattigan.
Maybe, it looks good on the play, but it is too slow-paced for the movie.
It is a pity that great actors had to act on a poorly written screenplay.

One of Hollywood's finest films because the entire cast is worthy of awards. See it to believe it.

Niven owns in this movie. Delivering the shortest best lead actor oscar performance of all time... 25 minutes long. Worth watching for sure.

I concur, this was an odd film. Great actors, across the board. David Niven won the Oscar for his unsavory role of the veteran with "Major" visions of grandeur -- and "Pee Wee Herman" syndrome. A poignant exchange between he and Deborah Kerr, who's just so damn cute and sweet -- I just wanna give her a pinch on the cheek! (lol) Lancaster and Hayworth's interplay was good, just not as juicy as the aforementioned scandal that got the pinched-faced old ladies' panties in a bunch. An evocative exercise in tolerance and charity.

An odd, but rather touching drama. Obviously a play set in film, with all the great dialogue that implies.

Sibyl Railton-Bell: "Why have you told so many AWFUL LIES?" 'Major' Angus Pollock: "Because I don't like myself the way I am, I suppose. I had to invent someone else... It's not too harmful, really. We all have our daydreams. Mine have just gone a step further than most people... Sometimes I just manage to believe in the Major myself."

Pat Cooper (to John about his relationship with Ann): "When you're together, you slash each other to pieces. When you're alone, you slash yourselves to pieces."
