Maverick lawyer Judy Carrier takes the lead in a case that's more personal than ever. Judy has always championed the underdog, so when Iris, the housekeeper and best friend of Judy's beloved Aunt Barb, is found dead of an apparent heart attack, Judy begins to suspect foul play. The circumstances of the death leave Judy with more questions than answers, and never before has murder struck so close to home. In the meantime, Judy's own life roils with emotional and professional upheaval. She doesn't play well with her boss, Bennie Rosato, which jeopardizes her making partner at the firm. Not only that, her best friend Mary DiNunzio is planning a wedding, leaving Judy feeling left behind, as well as newly unhappy in her relationship with her live-in boyfriend Frank. Judy sets her own drama aside and begins an investigation of Iris's murder, then discovers a shocking truth that confounds her expectations and leads her in a completely different direction.

I usually enjoy her books about these female lawyers, but I found myself skipping paragraphs, and even pages of nonsensical conversations that didn't really help the storyline. If I didn't like this author, I would tend to believe that the conversational drivel was simply page fillers to complete the book. Far from her best work. It was reach for me to give this 3 stars.

Michael Connelly's recommendation of Lisa Scottoline was hyperbolic as a lot of the prose is clunky and at a fifth grade level especially with poor clause construction and occasions when commas are used when Strunk is screaming for semicolons. Agonizingly slow for the first two-thirds of the novel while the final third strains credulity for the mode of the final good-guy killing and the improbability of the heroine outrunning two killers, one armed with a rifle. Nothing to write home about.

Girl finds her mother is really her aunt. Aunt is her mother.

This was my first Scottoline book. I give it solid 4🌟s.
Very well written. Easy to follow. The book has few interesting twists. I've added Scottoline to my favorite authors list.

I listened to the audio book version of Betrayed during a road trip and the miles flew by. I almost hated stopping for bathroom breaks. :)

A little different from other Scottolini mysteries and I liked the depth. I am familiar with the geographic setting, which helped.

This was a fast-moving, quick read, with revelations that are surprising. Enjoyed "Don't Go", "Corrupted" and "Devil's Corner" much more.

I liked the book, good story line, but I really want the ensemble cast back! I don't like that the entire book is focused on just 1 lawyer. I miss the old style!

Good pacing, lots of plot twists & an ending you won't see coming! Awesome read.

Totally enjoyed this book. my first Rosato & Assoc. but I intend to pursue others. I thought the story was very exciting and I like the way Judy dealt with all the things in her personal life as well as her involvement in solving this case.
