Try to get the original UK widescreen edition when possible. Some are from the PBS and they love to advertise over and over again. Their advertising is annoying.
Brilliant British mystery series better than anything from the US. They spend plenty of money producing each episode thus there are usually 6-8 per season. Filmed on location rather than using green screen graphic style you may find yourself feeling inside the episodes. Wonderful actors who handle the scripts as though they are writing it as they speak.
What is it with the Brits that a "season" only comprises a few actual episodes?? Annoying.
But that is my only real disappointment with this continuing series. The stories are affecting and nuanced, the acting superb, and the Oxford locations beautiful--the production values are if anything even better than the original Inspector Morse series from which this show was spun.
Kevin Whately has matured nicely into the senior inspector role, having once been the youthful, questioning partner to the erudite and acerbic DCI Morse (the late great John Thaw). Some of that world-weary grump seems to have rubbed off on the older Lewis; but then, as the Inspector Lewis series commenced he was mourning the sudden car crash death of his beloved (and unseen) wife, Maureen. Laurence Fox, whose long expressive face and lanky physicality reminds one unavoidably of the young Donald Sutherland, brings intelligence and wit to the role of DI Hathaway; he makes a fine partner for the now weathered, wiser Lewis.
"Beyond good and evil" has Lewis reprising a role Morse did when he had to fight a serial killer with a burning desire to go after the man who put him away. Lewis helped put away a "cop killer" who has figured out how to get out of prison, which will afford him the opportunity to even scores with Lewis. Lewis and Hathaway are a good team, right behind Morse and Lewis.
If you loved Inspector Morse you will love this series. Kevin Whately is wonderful and Laurence Fox is a new and interesting character. Really enjoyable.
Hard to see Hathaway with a new partner.
Love the working partnership between DI Lewis and DI Hathaway. The actor who plays DI Hathaway is such a joy to watch. So disappointed there were only 3 episodes in Series 7. Hopefully there are more episodes in the works.
