"Asks what would happen if we changed the implicit goal of education and imagines how different things would be if we made happiness, rather than money, the graduation prize. Drawing on psychology, education theory, and a broad range of classroom experiences across the country, Engel offers [an] ... alternative view of what education might become: teaching children to read books for pleasure and self-expansion and encouraging collaboration"--Dust jacket flap.

This is one brilliant book by one brilliant lady! Although I have yet to read the entire book, I have read several chapters online and heard the author in an interview, which displayed some truly incredible insights into REAL education. The points she makes are as elegantly logical as they are cogently realistic! A love of learning; a love for learning, independent thinking and analytical thinking, should be the foundation for the lives of everyone! Any student of the history of technology will know that some seriously progressive people were responsible for the bulk of our civilization today, especially on the scientific and technical sides, and the straight-laced, neocon or conservatives do not push the envelope of humanity.
