The "war with no name "has begun, with human extinction as its goal. The instigator of this war is the Colony, a race of intelligent ants who, for thousands of years, have been silently building an army that would forever eradicate the destructive, oppressive humans. Under the Colony's watchful eye, this utopia will be free of the humans' penchant for violence, exploitation and religious superstition. The final step in the Colony's war effort is transforming the surface animals into high-functioning two-legged beings who rise up to kill their masters. Former housecat turned war hero, Mort(e) is famous for taking on the most dangerous missions and fighting the dreaded human bio-weapon EMSAH. But the true motivation behind his recklessness is his ongoing search for a pre-transformation friend--a dog named Sheba. When he receives a mysterious message from the dwindling human resistance claiming Sheba is alive, he begins a journey that will take him from the remaining human strongholds to the heart of the Colony, where he will discover the source of EMSAH and the ultimate fate of all of earth's creatures.

At first, a laughable concept. Ants taking over the world? Wha..? But the cast of characters, setting and places grow, twist and turn as the book moves forward. Easily a book that could translate well into a graphic novel with the way it is written along with the overtone themes it presents of human redemption in face of chaos. Give it a read, especially if you are into graphic novels.

This dystopian near-future novel about sentient mutated animals and giant evil ants might SOUND a bit strange, but this adventure story about a cat, Mort(e), in search of this friend, Sheba, is superbly written, with a ton of heart, and is a must for dystopian fiction fans. Give it a shot.

The lowly ant has become the dominant animal of the world. They have developed a tool that provides all the other animals with the same abilities as humans, limited only by physical constructs (a hoof has no thumb). Warfare on humans ensues. At its heart, the story is a search by Mort(e) for his first love. Along the way; classes of society develop, alliances form, chaos and destruction are rampant, prejudice is ripe. In the end, have the animals who overthrew their owners and masters created the ideal meritocracy?

Insightful and entertaining read. Just wish the plot wasn't so bogged down by the heavy military narrative and focused more on Mort(e) and Sheba.

"Love is stronger than God." Too bad Repino couldn't get to that conclusion without horror.

Imagine a text-only mash-up of Duncan the Wonder Dog (Adam Hines), Ant Colony (Michael Deforge), Terra Formars (Yu Sasuga), Animal Farm (Orwell) and Cat Out of Hell (Lynn Truss). Whew! It's original, suspenseful, existential and thought-provoking.

I preferred the first part of the story, which owed more to Kafka than Animal Farm, but the whole thing is worth reading. A surprisingly engrossing dystopian vision of an ant-led housepet uprising.
