Flavia de Luce--"part Harriet the Spy, part Violet Baudelaire from Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" (The New York Times Book Review)--takes her remarkable sleuthing prowess to the unexpectedly unsavory world of Canadian boarding schools in the captivating new mystery from New York Times bestselling author Alan Bradley.Banished! is how twelve-year-old Flavia de Luce laments her predicament, when her father and Aunt Felicity ship her off to Miss Bodycote's Female Academy, the boarding school that her mother, Harriet, once attended across the sea in Canada. The sun has not yet risen on Flavia's first day in captivity when a gift lands at her feet. Flavia being Flavia, a budding chemist and sleuth, that gift is a charred and mummified body, which tumbles out of a bedroom chimney. Now, while attending classes, making friends (and enemies), and assessing the school's stern headmistress and faculty (one of whom is an acquitted murderess), Flavia is on the hunt for the victim's identity and time of death, as well as suspects, motives, and means. Rumors swirl that Miss Bodycote's is haunted, and that several girls have disappeared without a trace. When it comes to solving multiple mysteries, Flavia is up to the task--but her true destiny has yet to be revealed. I was so happy to find this audio book (rather than a hardcover) to listen while I was travelling! The narrator is great! Having read the first 3 or so in this series, I didn't think it mattered if I skipped around b/c the next few weren't available, and Flavia is such a great character. I did wish I read the one just prior though (The Dead in their Vaulted Arches), because of the storyline and the reason for her being at Miss Bodycotes. Be sure to read that one first...still I loved it, and love Flavia!

Another fun audio for the commute. I must say that I missed Buckshaw and the people of Bishop's Lacey but this was a fun story, none the less.
The story itself was interesting. I've got a few questions of "Why?" but am sure they will be cleared up.
I'm not sure if I like the storyline of the Nides; perhaps a bit too secretive for a little girl.
But, as always, a fun story and I enjoyed my time with Flavia.

Another wonderful story from Alan Bradley. Purely delightful.
Jane Entwhistle is perfect for narrating Flavia. Her English voice sounds exactly as one would imagine Flavia to sound.
Keep writing Alan Bradley - cannot wait for the next one.
Always sad to finish a Flavia De Luce story.

I adore Flavia de Luce. I want to BE Flavia. The writing is so marvelous, that I would go back and listen, just to get a good belly laugh. And bless Jayne EntwistleI She has become my favorite narrator.
Long live Flavia!

Always a joy to read books in this series. I particularly enjoy the narration of Jane Entwhistle, who is probably the best audio reader I've ever heard. She recently won an award for this. Here we see new development as Flavia is on her own at Miss Bodycote's school in Toronto. Some interesting characters and much more character development for Flavia, but I really missed Bishop's Lacey and Buckshore--so does our Flavia. Still, all in all, a delightful read.
