Seraphina took the literary world by storm with 8 starred reviews and numerous "Best of" lists. At last, her eagerly awaited sequel has arrived--and with it comes an epic battle between humans and dragons. The kingdom of Goredd: a world where humans and dragons share life with an uneasy balance, and those few who are both human and dragon must hide the truth. Seraphina is one of these, part girl, part dragon, who is reluctantly drawn into the politics of her world. When war breaks out between the dragons and humans, she must travel the lands to find those like herself--for she has an inexplicable connection to all of them, and together they will be able to fight the dragons in powerful, magical ways. As Seraphina gathers this motley crew, she is pursued by humans who want to stop her. But the most terrifying is another half dragon, who can creep into people's minds and take them over. Until now, Seraphina has kept her mind safe from intruders, but that also means she's held back her own gift. It is time to make a choice: Cling to the safety of her old life, or embrace a powerful new destiny?

This was a thoroughly satisfying sequel to Hartman's Serafina—both well-written, inventive and enjoyable fantasies to me, the older reader. I would hope that they'd also appeal to the YA audience despite the lack of an over-the-top romance—something I found refreshing considering how many YA novels in this genre devolve into romance novels these days.

Though there is certainly room for this universe and storyline to grow, the book's ending was complete enough to be a final piece. I do hope Hartman gives us more of Serafina's story. She is a character I have come to love.

A superb follow up to Seraphina. I was on the edge of seat listening to this. The stakes are raised with the introduction of a blood chilliing new character. I love this addition to Seraphina, and I am happy with the conclusion of the series, though I feel it is open ended and could be added to if Rachel Hartman ever felt the hankering to return to Goredd.

Such great world building. Such excellent character development. Such a detailed, compelling story. Such a refreshing pleasure every moment I spent with it.

While the first Seraphina book largely focused on Seraphina's efforts to keep her half-dragon identity hidden, Shadow Scale is all about finding and revealing her world's half-dragons. Seraphina and those close to her believe the half-dragons share a mental/psychic bond that may be a useful military defense in the war that is headed their way--and she longs for the kinship she hopes to feel upon meeting them after a lifetime of isolation believing she was a unique abomination. It's a quest that takes her across all manner of international, geographic, cultural, and interpersonal landscapes, each fraught with peril; it's a quest that gradually reveals secrets about the half-dragons much more momentous and significant than their existence and identities--much more pivotal, in ways both good and bad, than anyone ever imagined.

An immensely satisfying reading experience.
