Malin has always been different, and when her father dies, leaving her alone, her choice is clear, stay, and remain an outsider forever, or leave in search of the mythical inheritance she is certain awaits her. Apprenticed to a series of strange and wonderful characters, Malin embarks on a grueling journey that crosses oceans and continents-from the high seas to desert plains - and leads to a discovery that she could never have expected. Beautifully written and hauntingly strange, The Mermaid's Child is a remarkable piece of storytelling, and an utterly unique work of fantasy from literary star Jo Baker.

3 CD's in on this book and I had to stop. The author romanticizes the sexual exploitation of a young orphan by a stranger who took her in "under his wing". There is no excuse or good reason for putting a romantic spin on the abuse of the teen by an older man even if she is attracted to him. He clearly takes advantage of her and would be jailed for statutory rape and molestation today. All of this takes up 2 CD's. During the 3rd CD he forces her into prostitution and the author gives graphic accounts of what she experiences. Not an uplifting book and definitely not worth the time. Shame on this author for trying to turn such a crime into romance.
