The book had an interesting twist (think, 'I see dead people") . I totally disliked the character Alice for her lack of parenting skills. By the end, I barely generated sympathy for her, but enough was detailed to find some small measure of understanding. Initially, I didn't think I would stay interested with the elephant-centered story, but glad I finished to the end. I have new knowledge and a bigger heart toward these creatures.

I give audio books more time than a hard copy to reel me in simply because of the job commute. I was entertained with the story line, suspended belief of the psychic world and went along for the ride, and learned the reality of elephant life vs the utter selfishness of humanity. Kudos to the author for bringing attention to the elephant plight.

Loved this story. Was pulled in and could not put it down. I recommended it to my sister and she is having the same experience with it. Great book!

Plodding, dull, predictable...oh, and elephants. Woohoo.

Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors. Loved this story and love how she can really portray human emotions/trials in her stories.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I remember hearing Jodi speak before this book was written -- someone asked what her next book would be, and she said it would have to do with elephants, so I've been looking forward to this book for several years. I love how thoroughly she researches her subjects, and felt confident that what I was learning about elephant behavior was accurate. I have a much greater appreciation for them and their society. I liked that this audio book was narrated in different voices for each character. The voice for Alice was a bit langourous, appropriate for the story line that started way in the past and slowly worked toward the present, but a little tedious. The other characters, were working backward from the present, and the interweaving of the stories was well done, as was the growth and learning process of the characters. The ending seemed a bit contrived with unexpected twists in the tale that made me wonder if there were hints I missed earlier in the book. It makes me want to read (listen to) it again now that I know how it ends.

I was really in to this book, and then came the bizarre twist at the end...way off track of where I thought the book was going. I learned alot about elephants and grief.

I've read most of Picoult's books and I'm finding it harder and harder to stick with them to get to what is usually a powerful ending. I'm pretty sure I would have set this one aside except I was listening, which, being more passive than reading, makes it possible to zone out sometimes. I found this book a little tedious. Yes, the characters were interesting and well-developed but the long elephant passages became hard to get through. When the narrator switched back to Jenna or Serenity from Alice I just said "yes!". The audiobook uses different voices for the different narrators which is nice. I thought the ending was good because I was beginning to wonder what it was all for if Alice was dead.

A totally amazing book! It was my first Jodi Picoult book and I was deeply touched as well as amused by the story and characters. Don't miss this one and I recommend it to everyone.

The book dragged on and on. The story could and should have been completed in half the words
