A child from a dying planet is sent to Earth, where he is brought up by human parents and poses as a newspaper reporter, becoming Superman when necessary to use his special powers to save others.

Have the kids seen this one? The Fortress of Solitude would be quite an impressive hideout to build.

Origin, Lex Luthor, Earthquake disaster, Lois Lane... Like most series, the 1978 pilot is the best. For the out-of-this world DC superhero fan, check out its sequels with Christopher Reeve as separate disks or the "Four Film Favorites: Superman," suitable for binge watching:

Superman, the movie 1978 (143 min.)
Superman II 1980 (127 min.)
Superman III 1983 (125 min.)
Superman IV, the quest for peace 1987 (90min.)
Includes theatrical trailers, deleted scenes, commentary, and additional scenes

I love this film for the whole 40 minutes devoted to introducing the character. It takes a good long time doing this, but I think it's the best part of the film. The music, of course is also great. One of my favorite soundtracks. I gave a point off for the ridiculous stuff in the last...15 minutes or so.

This movie was worth the time it took to watch it. It was a little slow though. Besides the brief taking of Our LORD's name in vain, it is worth a watch.

This is not just a Superhero movie for entertainment. This one has serious symbolic meaning, and the commentators didn't seem to have grasped this. The dying planet's name is Krypton, which in itself is a cryptic name for Earth. (We are in the process of destroying the Earth). The Council at the beginning of the movie does exist, and the decision has been made to save the world by the creation of a new, perfect man, I might say, the new Messiah, who is unselfish and strong and good to others. By the way, the holy writings also speak about this plan, as if it was God's plan, because the Wise ones of the human race realized long ago that a "sinless," unselfish man is needed to create a Kingdom of Heaven on earth. The Superman is the new Son of Man who will save our world for the future (save it from us, selfish, dumb ones.) An interesting feature of the movie is that falling in love with a woman turns our hero into a weakling, and he has to be re-treated into his heroic state. It is also interesting that on talk radio a guest said he talked with two separate persons who said to him the same thing: that treatment under a glass pyramid is actually used to enhance the capabilities of some persons. They increase their intuitive powers.

I first saw Superman the Movie when it premiered at the Capital Theatre in 1978, and was as awed then, as I am today by this terrific and monumental big scale motion picture. Christopher Reeve was and is to date, the most true to life portrayal of the character of Superman. Gene Hackman brought a comic flair to his Lex Luthor. There are so many great moments in this movie to list, but if you want to see a comic book adaptation done right, look no further than this film. Classic and timeless.

The greatest superhero movie of all time still holds up as amazing today. Not as flashy as the recently released Man of Steel but still a great movie.

For me, there will be no other than can take away the Clark Kent/Superman role from Christopher Reeve.
