Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of Greta Gerwig. In her movies, she is usually pretty much the same person - the insecure, quasi-intellectual with a quirky view of the world. It works. Lola Kirke holds her own as Tracy, Brooke's (Gerwig's) soon to be stepsister. It's a platonic love story between women trying to find themselves at college and in the big city (NYC). It was fun to watch until Tracy, Brooke and friends find themselves at one of Brooke's former friend's homes in the rich suburbs. There things dragged a bit. The friend characters of Tony and Nicolette were rather 2-dimensional. Writer/director Noah Baumbach could have done more with them, but the Tracy + Brooke story is a good one.

Not as good as Frances Ha (which I loved), but if you like
films with interesting central characters that are women, you may like it, too. Quirky, different, and well-written.
Co-written by Noah Baumbach & Greta Gerwig.

As a twenty something who dabbles in "purposeless floundering about" and thoroughly enjoyed Baumbach and Gerwig's "Francis Ha," I thought "Mistress America" was great. Funny, surreal, earnest. It's not a perfect movie by any means, but it struck a chord with me.

Ugh. Possibly the 20-somethings might enjoy this film about people of their generation purposelessly floundering about, but leave it on the shelf if you're over 30. And I don't care if this makes me sound old.

as in Frances Ha, more of Greta Gerwig dithering through her young life. both films were written for her by the Baumbach/Gerwig duo. I don't think I'll be watching their next one.

Awful drek- the characters are repugnant and remain that way until the very end of the picture. The dialogue is like a mash up of badly written, supposedly " witty " sitcom fare delivered at breakneck speed. Annoying and a waste of your time.

The narrative never really grabbed me- a story about buddies trying to find their place in the world. Takes place in New York City, focuses on the life of Tracy (meek) who is a freshman in college and sister-to-be in Brooke (a free spirit). I am sure I won't remember too much from this film once a couple weeks go by

Kind of offbeat film with unknown (to me) actors of varying talent. I think directing may be partly the cause of uneven pace and feeling of awkwardness. Deserves applause and viewing for everyone's effort.
