On her first day as a newly minted homicide detective, Sarah 'Salt' Alt is given the cold case murder of a blues musician whose death was ruled an accidental drug overdose. Now, new evidence has come to light that he may have been given an overdose intentionally. This evidence came from a convicted felon hoping to trade his knowledge for shortened prison time. A man who Salt herself put behind bars. In a search that will take her into the depths of Atlanta's buried wounds, Salt probes her way toward the truth in a case that has more at stake than she ever could have imagined.

Sarah Alt ("Salt") has just been promoted to Atlanta's homicide unit. after years of work in and around "The Homes" - one of Atlanta's poorest, most drug-ridden communities. Her first assignment is to work a cold case whose victim was a young blues musician, now rumored to have been given a "hot dose" of heroin. Salt soon finds herself back in the old neighborhood and finding links between the cold case and a current double homicide. The author, a former Atlanta police officer, has a great ear for Southern dialog and offers memorable depictions of Atlanta's blues scene, homeless hangouts, and lost souls. Cover quotes praising her style from Joseph Wambaugh, Lisa Gardner, and Margaret Maron. I hope Boyce continues the series - she's an author to watch.
