"When Kristin Chapman agrees to let her husband, Richard, host his brother's bachelor party, she expects a certain amount of debauchery. She brings their young daughter to Manhattan for the evening, leaving her Westchester home to the men and their hired entertainment. What she does not expect is this: bacchanalian drunkenness, her husband sharing a dangerously intimate moment in the guest room, and two women stabbing and killing their Russian bodyguards before driving off into the night. In the aftermath, Kristin and Richard's life rapidly spirals into nightmare. The police throw them out of their home, now a crime scene, Richard's investment banking firm puts him on indefinite leave, and Kristin is unsure if she can forgive her husband for the moment he shared with a dark-haired girl in the guest room. But the dark-haired girl, Alexandra, faces a much graver danger. In one breathless, violent night, she is free, running to escape the police who will arrest her and the gangsters who will kill her in a heartbeat"--Amazon.com.

What happens when a man hosts a bachelor party for his wild brother? Well, what happens in this house, doesn't stay in this house when the two strippers aka foreign sex slaves decide to kill their handlers in a rather spectacular fashion. A fun read with some pretensions of being an expose on sex rings that doesn't work very well, but overall, not a literary masterpiece

didnt anyone have a problem with the sex and violence? I like thrillers but maybe i have to read on to get to a good point. Not one to give up on a book but....

Fast paced thriller with an ending that took me by surprise. I like that in a book.

I could not put it down. Loved it.

On a big picture level, this novel tackles important subjects and offers a simple but action packed story. However, this novel certainly has problems, from success of the social commentary, to the believability of the characters, and the word choices made by the author. Overall, I don't think this is a worthwhile read. Bohjalian has better offerings, such as Midwives.

Well that was a ride. This is the second book I've read by this author and I was hanging on pretty much every word. The fallout of a bachelor party gone very wrong is the basic plot outline here but the fallout is wide. We see the effect on Richard, the man who offered up his house, his wife and daughter and we follow one of the "party girls" as well. The attitudes of everyone involved is also a point of interest as well, whether it's related to the incident directly or more broadly. There's a lot of "what would I do" going through my head and I certainly don't have an answer.

The story moved along nicely and kept me reading, but overall was fairly unsatisfying.

THE GUEST ROOM was not the edge-of-your-seat thriller I was expecting. For me it lacked depth in terms of character development and in its attempt to explore serious, ripped-from-the-headline issues. I liked it, just didn't love it.

I had a big problem with the writing in this novel. The characters were so undeveloped. I couldn't take one single character seriously. I have read a few of this author's historical fiction books and found them to be much better.

I have read and enjoyed many of this authors' earlier books. I can't say I enjoyed this book but it is a haunting story. The raw descriptions of sex slavery are disturbing and at times difficult to read. I would only recommend it to someone with a warning that they may find it difficult to read about the horrors of sex slavery...
