Annah is an affluent newly widowed woman from South Carolina who is confronted by the shocking truth that her late husband had been having a long affair with another woman. She flees to Florida where she meets a man she cares for but who is below her social status. After their relationship deteriorates, she finds peace at the home of her maid on the Sea Islands' Gullah community. Her experiences prompt her to evaluate her life and push her to new insights regarding her family, her past and her future.
