TEENREVIEWBOARD

In Neo-Tokyo 2019, with the Olympics coming up, the city is swallowed up by troubled youth and gang violence wreaking havoc. The movie follows Kaneda, a teen who is part of a motorcycle group, with the opening shots of him and his best friend Tetsuo racing against the rival gang. Suddenly Tetsuo almost crashes into a child. The child unbeknownst to them is a telepathic escapee from a governmental lab. A gov. official shows up and escorts the child back to the lab and requests that Tetsuo be hospitalized. Kaneda and the rest of the mob get questioned, then when leaving he sees a girl named Kei and tries to flirt with her. After rejecting his attempts, he persuades the officers to release her. Meanwhile, Tetsuo has been diagnosed to have telepathic abilities, similar to Akira the telepath who destroyed Tokyo years back. A different telepathic child in the lab who is clairvoyant sees that the city would be destroyed by Tetsuo's instability, but no one listens to him. Tetsuo scarcely leaves the lab before he is attacked by the rival gang (clowns) and is retrieved by the gov. Kaneda saves Kei from a terrorist bombing and joins the rebels to save his friend, the lab kids try to bring out Tetsuo's power but fail, Kaneda and the rebels show up trying to calm Tetsuo down. Kaneda's best friend flees after learning how he could reach infinite power by finding Akira's remains Kei and Kaneda gets jailed, while the rebels leader tries to start a revolution. Tetsuo is now corrupt and kills his former gang members for not helping him escape the gov. Kaneda tries to find Tetsuo to avenge his murdered friends, while Tetsuo finds Akira's remains in the Olympic Stadium, the lab kids, Kaneda, and Kei all unsuccessfully fight Tetsuo. Soon Tetsuo is becoming an enormous being, Akira awakens and teleports Tetsuo and himself far into space so they could become entities of their own. Tokyo, however, is once again destroyed. Kei develops telepathic powers, she and Kaneda must now cope with the disaster that has happened. This movie is basically a critical review of the world during the time of the bombing of Pearl Harbour and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima. This movie is heavily critically acclaimed and considered one of the greatest animated movies ever.

Sorry to say it, but this anime is overrated at least in my opinion and don't get me wrong I'm a big anime fan I've seen more than a hundred tv series and movies so I keep an open mind, but I just found the dialogue was childish, on the plus side the animation was good, but the plot and story was just all over the place and the characters are generic.

This film is worth watching. Bring no pre-conceived notions of what you believe anime to be, this film is simply solid in the medium itself. Critics as far back as Roger Ebert have praised this movie for it's incredible animation, it's well done science fiction. And to this day by many it is regarded as a landmark in animation. Something that changed the landscape of the visual media markets as it broke Japan's animated shows out into the wider global audience.

I don't want to say more for risk of ruining anything. Simply put if you enjoy science fiction, or animated films, give this a watch. Even if you simply have an interest in film, that too would be reason enough to watch this classic. And for it's historical value to the medium, that, to me, makes it worth a watch.

I'm not 10 years old so I don't like anime but if this was ever (finally) made into a real movie I'm sure I would like it. (As long as they made the main characters a bit older and improved the childish dialogue)

Finally got round to watching this thanks to the VPL. A pillar in not just japanese animation but cinema in general. I'd love to read the 6 issue graphic novel as well. Remarkable attention to small details. The lighting effects in the animation were breathtaking.

Seeing as how this was THE first anime to start me on my upward spiral to becoming an anime lover,I have always recommended this as a good starting point for others. The story can get a bit thick and hard to follow at times. The animation and art style still holds up today! Why are you still reading this and not checking it out and watching it?

This is a cult classic. Worth a watch but not sure what the take away is - friendship, honor, good will towards man - those sort of themes which seem common in this genre.

The issue with trying to review Akira, is which version are we to review? And of course, did you see the same version. As one of the grand daddies of the second wave of the Anime Invasion (following Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, Macross and the like), Akira was 'localized' for western audiences multiple times with varying degrees of success. I have watched this movie numerous times and the varying localisations had bled together in my mind. That said, most of the current version one can obtain are either solid or excellent, so I wouldn't worry too much. But the older the version you find, then more wary you should be.
