This work introduced a major modern author to the reading public. Doig's life was formed among the sheepherders and other denizens of small-town saloons and valley ranches as he wandered beside his restless father. New Preface by the Author.

Memoir of novelist, one of my favorites, he writes novels of west, mostly (not western formula, though). This may be his first published book, 1978, he was 39 at that time. His mother died when he was 6 and his father and mother's mother raised him, together. Many of his novels' characters are based on real characters in his life.
