As the autumn storms of 1271 ravage the East Anglian coast, Crowner Ralf finds the corpse of a brutally murdered soldier in the woods near Tyndal Priory. The dagger in the man's chest is engraved with a strange, cursive design, and the body is wrapped in a crusader's cloak. Was this the act of a member of the Assassin sect or was the weapon meant to mislead him in finding the killer Ralf's decision to take the corpse to the priory for advice may be reasonable, but he is soon caught up in a maelstrom of conflict, both personal and political. The priory is deeply divided over whether to purchase a relic, a decision that endangers both Prioress Eleanor's leadership and the future of the hospital. Brother Thomas becomes a suspect in the murder itself, and Ralf must choose between the demands of his brother, the sheriff, and loyalty to a friend. Meanwhile, the murderer watches and waits.

Priscilla Royal has done amazing research for this series of books. Several of them have "Author's Notes" giving a short summary of pertinent history as well as a bibliography to learn more. This book gives us a look at religious artifact fraud in 1271 as well as the effects of soldiers returning from the Crusades with physical as well as psychological wounds. Eleanor, prioress of Tyndal, Sister Anne, Brother Thomas, and Ralf, the Crowner (Coroner) manage to solve two murders, an attack on the Infirmarer, and sheep stealing, as well as reliquary fraud. Quite a busy autumn for the priory.

Not your Ellis Peters equivalent, no matter what the publisher thinks.
Certainly, not in the realm of a Gregory, Jeck, Doherty, or Peters at all. But, this may be a first novel; so second one might have a better though out plot, with more emphasis on emotive and actions done.
Kinda of a one kind of focus though, and not kindly done.
