It is May of 1272, and Prioress Eleanor, recovering from a near-fatal winter fever, returns to Amesbury Priory to visit her aunt in time for the Feast of Saint Melor. Nothing like ghosts and murders to perk Eleanor up when she's trying to recuperate from a serious illness. Aunt Beatrice is also becoming interested in why Brother Thomas is a monk, when he seems to have little interest in the vocation, and Eleanor seems interested in him. Many peoples' secrets contribute to the complex threads of this mystery; and, by the end, most of them have been unraveled and set to rights.
