Despite a lack of obvious similarities between Siberia and Tokyo, a thriving model industry connects these distant regions. Girl Model follows two protagonists involved in this industry: Ashley, a deeply ambivalent model scout who scours the Siberian countryside looking for fresh faces to send to the Japanese market, and one of her discoveries, Nadya, a 13-year-old plucked from her rustic home in Russia and dropped into the center of bustling Tokyo with promises of a profitable career. After Ashley's initial discovery of Nadya, they rarely meet again, but their stories are inextricably bound. As Nadya's optimism about rescuing her family from financial hardship grows, her dreams contrast against Ashley's more jaded outlook about the industry's corrosive influence.

If you don't believe that "certain" modelling agencies are, in fact, recruiting naive, young girls (as young as 12) for the sole purpose of prostitution, then watch "Girl Model" and you just may change your viewpoint on that matter.

Here are my 2 biggest beefs regarding this 2011 documentary - (1) I felt that its editing was way too uneven. (And, most importantly) - (2) It just didn't dig deep enough into its investigation of modelling agencies (that are located as far away as Siberia) whose calculating "scouts" are recruiting 13-year-old girls (who are, sadly enough, being treated like disposable goods).

But, with that said - "Girl Model" certainly did paint a very negative picture of the modelling business. Unfortunately, this is a business that continues to thrive today (in some countries) even though it lacks basic labour-protection laws for the (surprisingly young) girls that are hired.

All-in-all - I thought that "Girl Model" was well-worth a view..... (*Watch movie-trailer video-clip*)

I haven't viewed this but it sounds as if Ashley Arbaugh is another redefined // feminist \\ because she ignores American child labor laws [whether or not they exist in Russia is besides the point, Ashley grew up under those laws] and is exploiting children and teens in a most amoral manner!

I found the modeling scout featured in this movie to be quite disturbed and definitely NOT a role model for teenage girls. She seemed more like a slave trader than anything else.

I've seen other documentaries about modeling and in comparison, this one was rather uninformative. It is all over the place and there isn't much dialogue, and whatever dialogue that there is isn't always so pertinent. If you're looking for a small, specific story following someone in the modeling world, then I suppose this would be alright, though the girl they follow (Nadya) isn't even a well-established young model. She's just not getting started and rather unsuccessfully. Overall, it just felt like a waste of my time. I was disappointed.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year.

The film is as much about the modeling scout as it is about the 13-year-old Nadya. It is interesting and disturbing. The scout used to be a teen model herself, yet she doesn't help prepare these young girls for what to expect. The contracts protect the agency but not the model, and the teenagers and their families don't know enough to question anything before the girls are taken away.
