The American people depend on a free press to keep a close and impartial watch on the national security operations that are carried out in our name. But in many cases, this trust is sadly misplaced, as leading journalists are seduced and manipulated by the secretive agencies they cover.

While the press remains silent about its corrupting relationship with the intelligence community--a relationship that dates back to the Cold War-- Spooking the News will blow the lid off this unseemly arrangement. Schou will name names and shine a spotlight on flagrant examples of collusion, when respected reporters have crossed the line and sold out to powerful agencies. The book will also document how the CIA has embedded itself in "liberal" Hollywood to ensure that its fictional spies get the hero treatment on screen.

Among the revelations in Spooking the News :
* The CIA created a special public affairs unit to influence the production of Hollywood films and TV shows, allowing celebrities involved in pro-CIA projects--including Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck--unique access inside the agency's headquarters.
* The CIA vets articles on controversial topics like the drone assassination program and grants friendly reporters background briefings on classified material, while simultaneously prosecuting ex-officers who spill the beans on damaging information.

All you need to do is read The New York Times every day to know that the U.S. intelligence bureaucracy controls most of the international reporting in the prestige press. There are reporters, like Rick Gladstone, to name one, who are basically government press agents. Another way to look at it, something that a lay person can easily understand, is the whole official enemies thing. International reporting in the United States is basically built around demonizing China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, with only the occasional cross word for allies and tyrannical despots in Saudi Arabia, U.A.E. and the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Nick Schou provides an excellent primer on the press since the creation of the CIA. It's a quick and substantive read.

Shazaaaam!
Nick Schou easily destroys the Washington Post, the NY Times, Newsweek [wasn't that sold for $1.00 one or two years back? Definitely overpriced!], and the American media in general.
Schou makes the admirable case that the same intelligence establishment-led media forces arrayed against Gary Webb [Dark Alliance] were utilized against Julian Assange [WikiLeaks].
This is one of the David Talbot edited Hot Books, short but deeply researched books meant to be as topical as possible, and I'm sure the author had no idea that Robert Kagan was about to throw a fundraiser for Hillary Rodham Clinton when he wrote the background stuff on that sleaze [formerly the journalist character assassin with the Reagan Administration - - co-founder of PNAC with Bill Kristol, and hubby to Victoria Nuland - - and yes, Hillary hired him at State on a consultant basis when she was secretary and compromising national security!]. I thought Andrea Mitchell would appear in this book - - and I was right!
