I am a WASP. A middle-age, middle class white Christian woman. I have never been behind bars, nor have I ever visited an incarcerated person for any reason. In the pages of Chris Hoke's book, I have met several characters who have spent time in juvenile detention, jail, prison ... even solitary confinement. The book captivated me the way a good novel reads, but the characters in this book are real people. Most of the offenders are from Skagit and Whatcom counties, where I live and work. Some are in Mexico and Central America. Several are now dead. Some are released and now thriving, striving to be good parents, partners and role models to others in the community who are as vulnerable as they once were. This book has stretched my faith and encouraged me. Seeing Chris Hoke mentor these young men with respect, love, prayer and encouragement has made me believe again that damaged hearts can be healed. While I'm finished reading the book, the seeds it's planted in my heart are not finished growing in me.
