As a fairly new beginner I did not find the projects in this book to be "simple" as is used in the title. There are many pretty projects in here, but not for my level of ability. Caveat: I did not watch the DVD. Maybe that would've made it all clear.

Really fun small projects in this book, all of them useful around-the-house items. Unfortunately, the project I was really looking forward to -- cathedral window pincushion -- made no sense to me, no matter how often I re-read the instructions.
That said, the other projects would make this a great book for folks brand new to sewing since there are so many different techniques to try out, including patchwork, embroidery, and sashiko. There is a section at the beginning with introductory information but some techniques, like crochet, had only the barest of hints to get started. Your mileage may vary!
