"Since the violent deaths of his wife, father, and best friend all occurred in previous Novembers, Cork O'Connor has always considered it to be the cruelest of months. Yet his daughter has chosen this dismal time of year in which to marry, and Cork is understandably uneasy. His concern comes to a head when a man camping in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness goes missing. As the official search ends with no recovery in sight, Cork is asked by the man's family to stay on the case. Although the wedding is fast approaching and the weather looks threatening, he accepts and returns to that vast wilderness on his own"-- Provided by publisher.

I like Krueger's Cork O'Connor books. MANITOU CANYON is another great read which is a well plotted and suspenseful. He does a great job of juxtaposing multiple, complex underlying themes: rural living (especially in northern climates), Native American and white man interactions, environmental and ecological issues, and the increasingly present and important matter of values related to money and the degree to which we as a society are willing to let the short term pursuit of money trump the long term strategies and decisions that need to be made to secure a safer, livable world.

I have enjoyed this series but it is becoming more and more political and very one sided. If the next book is more of the same, I will ve safly fone with this series and the author.

A side comment -- this large print version is a joy to read. It makes reading more relaxing, more pleasant. It was well worth the wait.

All in all a good book in the series. It's such a long series that we feel pretty invested in the characters so even though the plot in this book is a bit strange it's all good. I got a little confused over the characters towards the end but basically just blew past it. For our beloved characters, one gets married, a old girlfriend comes back to another, a door opens for our hero and a near miracle happens for a late-bloomer.

Not a bad read as a mystery novel. The romanticized white man views of what his Native American main characters live and how they view the world is somewhat adolescent. But a lot of readers will savor that in all likelihood, the way so many female readers savor romance novels.
