As Good As Gone by Larry Watson is another one of his rich stories about family, trust and reliability told in his resolute yet touching style that produces a powerful and heart felt story. Watson returns to his familiar territory of small town, Montana and sets his tale in the early 1960’s. The story is both suspenseful and dramatic and altogether a very good read.

Excellent storytelling and characters. I always regretted putting the book down for the day.

Characters that are true, a strong sense of place, and a tightly crafted story told with a wry but eloquent voice. A pleasure to read and savor.

Small town Gladstone, Montana, is Watson’s setting for his family story when son Bill asks his taciturn father Calvin to care for his children Ann and Will when Bill and his wife must travel to Missoula. Of course, unexpected things happen.

Part old West saga, part coming-of-age story, I’m always impressed by Watson’s storytelling. The boy Will and the neighbor Beverly Lodge were my favorites, the mother Marjorie not so much. Highly recommended.
