Lincoln Jones is always working on the latest story he's got going in his notebook. Those stories are his refuge. A place where the hero always prevails and the bad guy goes to jail. Real life is messy and complicated, so Lincoln sticks to fiction and keeps to himself. Which works fine until a nosy girl at his new school starts prying into his private business. She wants to know what he's writing, where he disappears to after school, and why he never talks to anybody.

I love the way this author writes. Van Draanen gives voice to a tween's perspective of some difficult life (and death) issues in this wonderful coming of age story.

A sweet, funny story about a memorable young protagonist. Lincoln's a hoot to read, and his classmates are equally amusing. The "oldies" at the Alzheimer's care center where his mother works are clearly meant to be hilarious, though Van Draanen walks a very fine line. They are certainly sources of amusement, but there are moments where I found myself wondering whether there was a lack of respect and sensitivity being shown towards elderly dementia patients. Adults may want to use these moments as discussion opportunities, and overall, Lincoln is remarkably caring and understanding towards the senior citizens in his life. It's refreshing to see a mother-son relationship operating under the specter of domestic violence that is loving and supportive. Everything wraps up a bit neatly, but young readers looking for a funny read that still has substance will enjoy this one, and it would make a great read aloud as well.
