I love to recommend this series to teens. Who doesn't love a retelling of Cinderella with a cyborg main character? The stepmother is infuriating and horrible, the story is creative, the main character level headed, intelligent and capable AND she's got a leatherman kit in her calf. Can't beat... Read More »

A cyberpunk retelling of Cinderella that takes place in New Beijing, post World War IV. While Earth struggles with a seemingly incurable plague and a caste system in which cyborgs are firmly situated at the bottom, while residents of the moon watch for an opportunity to swoop in and take control... Before reading this book, I'd heard a great deal about it. I love fairy tale re-imaginings, but I was reluctant to try reading Meyer's interpretation of Cinderella. I have never really cared for steampunk particularly, unless the book is exceptional. Well, this book was exceptional!

I started ... Read More »

I got really into Renegades, so I looked into Marissa Meyer’s other books. When I found out they concerned cyborg princesses from the moon, I thought they were too weird. But then my friend told me to read them, because they were, according to her, amazing in every way. So I checked out this book, thinking it wouldn’t be very good. But actually, after a little bit of research and a pinch of reading ahead, I was enthralled. The characters are amazingly real, the world building exquisite, and the plot twists riveting. This book is so weird you just can’t help but love it! I like that Marissa Meyer found a way to mix science fiction with a classic story, making it uniquely magical. I think the main character was remarkably feminist, even for a princess. I would recommend this book to lovers of sci-fi and fantasy, though it was a bit overwhelming. One of the best parts is that it has a touch of romance, but it’s not really the main point of the story. Don’t let the whole cyborg princess from the moon thing fool you; THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!!!!!!😱

I think this book is one of the few I actually don't have anything bad to say about. Most of the retellings of Cinderella that I've read are still very similar to the original, but this one was completely unique. I loved the futuristic setting, and the characters were very compelling.

Such a unique and special retelling of Cinderella!! Cyborgs, silly androids and a deadly virus, this book is so worth the read! The story remain true to the original tail while taking it into an intirely new direction! The novel is full of themes of love between sisters and explore what it means to be human and have emotions as well as free will and hope among a hopeless situation.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer is the first book of the Lunar Chronicles. It’s a Cinderella retelling that takes place in the future. This story is about a cyborg named Cinder, who is looked down upon in society for not being completely human. I would give this book 3/5 stars because although it was enjoyable, it wasn’t spectacular. Meyer’s writing style was sufficient, yet unnotable. I found most of the characters’ personalities bland, yet the emphasis on their emotions gave them depth. The romance wasn’t particularly interesting, but it was cute. The plot twists were predictable if you paid attention to the hints. However, the world building was astounding: the setting was very unique for a Cinderella retelling, and the creativity behind it was impressive. Cinder is a very entertaining book with almost no cliches. Its plot is derived from the classic Cinderella story, but of course, the setting, the characters, and most of the important plot points are still vastly different from the original story. It’s interesting because there are often what would be considered “easter eggs” that link different scenes to Cinderella, but with a surprising twist added to it. The book tells the story of a girl/mechanic named Cinder and her encounters involving a stepmother, a stepsister, a prince, and a ball. The narrator also changes from one character to another, allowing us to see the whole picture. The author did a great job in preserving the backbone of the Cinderella story and building a new story packed with unexpected twists and turns. Although it lacks deep meaningful messages that make a book truly memorable, it's still a fast-paced and thrilling read that everyone would enjoy. I would rate this book a 3.5 out of 5. Ended up, literally, not putting this book down until I finished it. I love how the general “Cinderella” theme was there, but so much more. Futuristic, adventurous... can’t wait to read book two! If it ever gets checked back in :/

I love this book it is a must read for everyone. I think it's funny how she tells the Cinderella story in like a different creative way. in my opinion, all of the books are really good. even though it looks really big your still going to finish it really fast. I just wish Marissa Myers would write more of these fairytale parodies.

An absolute classic in the steampunk fiction genre. Either a great introduction to this genre or a must read if you like the genre and somehow haven't read it yet!
