Current format, Mixed Material, , In-library use only. Offered in 0 more formatsPaul Phillips was born on March 9, 1918 in Denver, Colorado. He started his military career with the Army at West Point on July 1, 1936 after accepting an appointment from Senator Costigan. He graduated West Point on June 11, 1940, then reported to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for a Basic Officers course in August 1940. In January of 1941, he was shipped to Manila in the Philippines and assigned as a junior officer in the 24th Field Artillery regiment at Fort Stotsenberg. He then became General Sharp's Secretary of General Staff and also his aide-de-camp and moved with General Sharp to Mindanao in January of 1942. He was taken prisoner after the Japanese invaded Cebu and General Sharp surrendered. As a POW, Mr. Phillips traveled from Mindanao to Luzon, then to Japan in January 1945, to Pusan, Korea in April, finally ending up in a prison camp near Mukden in Manchuria. The prisoners were rescued mid-August of 1945. Mr. Phillips details his experiences as a POW from 1942-1945, as well as his assignments after the end of World War II, such as his work in the Pentagon. Mr. Phillips also touches on civilian life after he retired from the Army in 1979 with the rank Brigadier General.
