This is a great primer for an overview of Hawaii. If you want a fun and interesting, more in-depth book of the islands history, I recommend Sarah Vowell’s Unfamiliar Fishes.

One quote from the children friendly book that made me think “Well, that’s putting it mildly” was regarding Captain Cook’s first visit: “His crews greatly enjoyed the time they spent on the islands.”

I’ll say...since Cook’s sailors introduced tuberculosis to the Native population (which would kill thousands) and they also introduced or brought venereal diseases like syphilis and gonorrhea (which of course would be horrendous to have, untreated...and led to a huge population decline, due to infertility).
