Another good Ann Cleeves detective novel. It kept you guessing to the end.

This is the ninth of the Vera series, and Cleeves is really coming into her own. She has finally nailed down (in her own mind and for her readers) who Vera really is. Her writing is tighter and more focused on the characters and their place in the story that the first couple of books, too. The pace is slower than some of the police procedurals and "shoot'em up" stories, but that is part of Vera's plodding nature. Her younger officers are frustrated with her gossip and nitpicking, but as always, it is the gossip and nitpicking that solve the case--with a sweet twist to this book! For me, this has been the best of the series.

The book, The Moth Catcher, lacked the spirit of the Vera tv series -- the book dragged and was too tedious to read more than a few pages. I love the tv series.

The Vera Stanhope series is more of a leisurely stroll, complete with stops at pubs and little fish n chips shops, than it is a heartpounding thrill ride. I found this one a bit on the slow side, however I have grown to love the characters so much I don't mind spending the extra time with them.

The TV series, Vera, on PBS, is based on these novels by Ann Cleeves. As I read the dialogue I could hear the actress who plays Vera speak the words. I could also envision this actress throughout the novel trying to solve the murder mystery with her detectives, Joe and Holly. So the TV series stays true to the books even in the casting of the Vera. I was surprised the producers could find an actress that meets the author's description. I enjoyed reading rather than viewing this story. There were many red herrings so that at the end of the story, when all is revealed, the motive for the murder and the murderer is a surprise.
