This collection contains both the four issue limited series that served as an origin for the character and the first issues of a solo series redefining the character after the events of the Knightfall event. A young student finds himself caught up in his family's heritage when his father dies and passes on his role as Azrael for a secret society. This brings him into conflict with Batman. The second portion finds Jean Paul struggling with his place in the world after his downfall from his days as Batman, and the road takes him abroad. The writing, most of it by Dennis O'Neil, firmly establishes the character as the story goes along.
