Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. They make their living scavenging recyclables from the trash. Life would be hard enough without the worry for their chronically ill child, Nisay, and the added expense of medicines that are not really working. Just when things seem most bleak, Sang Ly learns a secret about the hated, ill-tempered woman, the "the rent collector"-she can read! Reluctantly she agrees to teach Sang Ly and does so with the same harshness she applied to her collection duties until they both learn how literacy has the power to instill hope and transcend circumstance. Based on a true story, set in the abject poverty of Cambodia against the backdrop of political oppression and the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge.

A story of suffering and hope. I will go out on a limb and say that (today is Feb 5) that this may be my favorite book of 2020. Beautifully written prose and characters with depth. The subject matter is difficult, but worth the read.

Life in Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in Cambodia, is hard when daily portion of rice is dependant on how much plastic one can collect but it's even harder for Sang Ly and Ki whose son's health is ailing. Determined to find a way to restore her son's health and to prevent him from ending up living his entire life in the shadows of his parents, she befriends Sopeap Sin, The Rent Collector, and learns from her the most important lessons of life. While most look to The Rent Collector as a cow and a heartless, black soul, she bears a secret that leaves you falling in love with her. This book narrates a story that reminds us that hope can and does reside in the worst of situations and that even the most cruelest and heartless person has a story to tell.

Sang Ly, a young Cambodian woman who with her husband and son live a survival lifestyle. learns to read from the cantankerous woman who collects their rent. What a journey! There was just something missing in how the author told this story that would make me think, 'How convenient.' or 'Could this have happened this way?' Stretched my credibility, but very touching nonetheless.

A story of a family living in a city dump in Cambodia and the transformation literacy brings into their lives. Very engaging and well-paced novel with great characters.

An enjoyable "feel-good" read. Waiting for someone to make this into a movie. After you finish the book do yourself a favor and research the actual events this novel is based off. There is hope in tragedy - good can even come from the dump.
