Josetta is a princess of one of the Five Families. But she is far from the throne, so she is free to spend her days working in the poorest sections of the city. Rafe Adova lives the life of a career gambler in those slums. He has no real ambition--until the night he helps a girl named Corene, who looks like she's stumbled into the wrong bar. Josetta is fascinated by the man who has helped her sister. Rafe is unlike anyone she's encountered--someone seemingly devoid of elemental blessings. Rafe is also drawn to Josetta, but when he is assaulted by foreign mercenaries and they discover the reason behind the attack, Rafe and Josetta realize that the truth could endanger not only their newfound love, but also their very lives...

A nice addition to the world of the Elemental Blessings. I enjoyed reading more about Josetta and Corene and it was nice to see how they have grown and matured since the first book. I also liked learning more about the other countries that surround Welce - but it would be nice if the other societies were not all so brutally flawed (or if Shinn explained more about them so we get a fuller picture).

I am not much of a chick lit reader and these books would seem to be just the kind I would avoid but I really love this series. The world building is fantastic, all the magical features are fascinating and I even like the love interests.

An entertaining tale, but I wasn't totally satisfied with the ending. (The problem of the Berringey bloodline remains, as far as I'm concerned.)

I enjoyed this read a lot. Sharon Shinn sure knows how to write about love and friendship. This is a real feel good book, just the way I like it.
