Don't just walk away, run away. I picked this movie up at least hoping it was beautiful enough to enjoy visually but honestly my first comment after finishing was that if I had paid to see this movie I would have demanded my money back. SAD.

I enjoyed this movie. It was largely lambasted by the critics, but I disagree. It is no amazing cinematic achievement for the ages... lots of CGI. But if you are a fan of the fantasy genre, then you are probably going to enjoy this movie. Matt Damon and Jing Tian are strong leads. It's a very interesting tale, a "world" you can get caught up in. I would NOT recommend this for kids younger than teenagers simply because of the gore and violence, PG13 is probably a good rating to go by, IMO. If you're hoping to see one of the great Chinese cinematic achievements, you likely will be disappointed. But you are interested in a fantasy action film with stunning visuals, a creative world and solid lead acting - you will enjoy this film.

Another movie that the kids enjoyed.
No serious intense storyline that you had to follow. Just a basic concept.
Some funny af laughs. My youngest loved the costume designs and my eldest loved the moves going on during the fight scenes.
Didn't have an issue with the acting - but I've never thought Matt Damon a very good actor anyway, so the supporting cast was better imo.
I loved how there was no massive drag on having to find out everyone's back story. It was just the 'here and now' thing.

This movie is an exercise in fantasy, with terrible acting, thin story line, and ridiculous creatures. Perfect for adolescents, which was probably the target audience.

Not as bad as I thought it could have been - thankfully - but there were some real challenges with some of the effects and I was hoping for something greater in regards to the antagonists.

Really enjoyed the Great Wall. Action from the get go, stunning CG, impressive army scenes and funny dialogue. Perfect amount of action and humour. Watched it twice actually! Matt Damon's accent though needs work - unsure what accent he was going for but dropped out a few times.

Wow... too much Special Effects...not much story line... and poor Matt Damon like what everyone else here says...MISCAST!

Where to begin. Artistry in every element, chemistry obvious, magnitude of setting, choreography, and the sheer beauty, not to mention efficiency of movement. I know, sounds like a description of ballet, but it's extremely high action battle, plenty of moral fortitude, with humor and emotion where needed. As the actress, Jing Tian, who played the heroine role, quotes the director, Zhang Yimou, (in the bonus section, which was rewarding to enjoy) "If you feel it inside, your eyes will show it too." And her eyes were memorable from various scenes, especially at the end, and I won't give that away, but she obviously understood that counsel. Yeah, Matt was great as usual too.

watch anything by this director, he is amazing! check out the bonus stuff for costume and settings. Don't get hung up on Matt, really check out the work put into this production. You will rarely see this much detail.

The movie is pretty but the story is predictable and silly. Matt Damon and Willem Defoe are both miscast. I sure hope their paycheck was worth it.

The Great Wall has impressive visuals, or at least they pop out at you, but the story is totally boring. I don't think Mark added anything to this movie.

Where are the Tao Tei now?
-The mountains, regrouping.
Where do they come from?
-About 20 centuries ago, there was an emperor whose greed brought deep suffering to all of China. The heavens sent the meteor that struck Gouwu Mountain, turning it green and releasing the Tao Tei. From that day on, the Tao Tei rise every 60 years to scourge the north of China. They come to remind us of what happens when greed is unchecked. They eat anything, alive or dead, and take food to their queen. She depends on her soldiers to feed her. Only with the food they provide is she able to multiply. The capital, and its two million
people, is only 800 li away. If the Tao Tei ever had that much nourishment, no corner of the world would be safe.

These men know what they're doing?
-Wrong question. Whether or not the cable is attached, that is the question.
And the answer?
-Xin ren. Xin ren means trust. To have faith. Here, in this army, we fight for more than food or money. We give our lives to something more. Xin ren is our flag. Trust in each other. In all ways, at all times.
-Well, that's all well and good, but I'm not jumping. I'm alive today because I trust no one.
A man must learn to trust before he can be trusted.
-Then you were right. We're not the same.
