The Baker's Secret is a nice departure from other WWII fiction stories. The story takes place in a small village on the coast of Normandy. The main character, a young lady named Emma, bakes bread for the Kommandant and his troops. She secretly passes a few extra loaves on to villagers who are starving. Her mission to keep the villagers alive evolves into a network of trade with Emma at the center. All the while, Emma believes no one will come to save their village. The author did a great job developing the characters. I also enjoyed the writing style and how the story evolved.
