"Christian Stern, an ambitious young scholar and alchemist, arrives in Prague in the bitter winter of 1599, intent on making his fortune at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor, the eccentric Rudolf II. The night of his arrival, drunk and lost, Christian stumbles upon the body of a young woman in Golden Lane, an alley hard by Rudolf's great castle. Dressed in a velvet gown, wearing a large gold medallion around her neck, the woman is clearly well-born--or was, for her throat has been slashed. A lesser man would smell danger, but Christian is determined to follow his fortunes wherever they may lead"--Provided by publisher.

This book is incredibly well written and a great mystery. Funny, I read a lot of mysteries and I think they are all quite good, then I read this and I realize this author is in a league all his own. I must read more by this gentleman.

A clever and gripping story by a master of mystery writing, Wolf on a String keeps you guessing until the end. The story is set in Prague in 1599, a world of danger and intrigue. Christian Stern the main character has the (mis)fortune of being charged with the task of solving the murder of a young courtesan amidst a miasma of intrigue, dark secrets and skulduggery. A constant air of impending doom hangs over the story that keeps you reading long past your bedtime. A superb literary thriller that's not to be missed.
