This poignant documentary chronicles the true story of a modern-day St. Francis of Assisi, a homeless San Francisco street musician by the name of Mark Bittner who adopts a flock of wild parrots as he searches for meaning in his life. With a surprise ending that left festival audiences cheering, director Judy Irving's film celebrates urban wildness -- human and avian -- and links parrot antics to human behavior.

Watching this engrossing film, one can remain ignorant of the dreadful lives most captured parrots end up living. So be sure to watch "Parrot Confidential" too, the bookend to this tale. Because of how much work it is to keep even one parrot, and because of the very long lives parrots live, thousands, maybe millions, of parrot "pets" are abandoned, thrown away, given away, sold to irresponsible breeders, and otherwise left to horrible lives here in the U.S. Parrots make unnatural pets regardless of what current owners may say. They need their parrot mate, and they need the wild forests of Latin American where they come from. Watching this film will astonish and educate you as it did me. I had no idea how smart they are and how easily and casually we humans ruin their lives. They deserve better than what they get from us.

Film Director Judy Irving's best film is "The Parrots of Telegraph Hill". Would you even believe that parrots are living wild in San Francisco. Seems enough escaped domestic homes and started to breed in the beautiful city by the bay. You will watch this family of parrots, that are all named by the young man that feeds them daily. It is an amazing story how they live and protect themselves. They are all so loveable that you can't help but root for "The Parrots of Telegraph Hill!

I watched this video years ago, so the detail isn't as clear to me now. But if you have a love for animals, this will touch your heart.
