Anyone can be a hero, even a rabbit who was 'almost' a coal miner. The desire to honour their forefathers with vigilance burns within Fleck Blackstar, who was named for the miner's symbol on his deceased Father's coat. In return for this desire, he is given the title 'captain' and across Ayman Lake they sail, searching for coal. But what they don't know, is that the monsters of legend live in those foreboding mountains, the birds of prey. The battle begins; an oath is born. Natalia's oldest hero is forged.
S.D Smith has once more forged his own magnificent tale, one that will plant a seed of fervent hope, even when the battle rages.

Prequel to The Green Ember series. I suggest, even though it is set before those times, reading The Green Ember first. It may give you a little more context. Anyway, the story was very good, but I wish it could have been a little longer. We do, however, learn where the green ember pledge came from, so that's great. Very family-friendly.

"'I remember that awful, eerie sound. It filled every rabbit with terror. Even the king seemed to tremble. But it was only the prelude to an attack that broke on us like hail, shattered us like kindling, and flung us into the depths. In the moments before they struck, I remember thinking one thing: This is the end of the world.'
From the journal of Massie Burnson, Black Star Company"

"My place beside you. My blood for yours. Till the Green Ember rises, or the end of the world!"
