Prequel to The Green Ember series. I suggest, even though it is set before those times, reading The Green Ember first. It may give you a little more context. Anyway, the story was very good, but I wish it could have been a little longer. We do, however, learn where the green ember pledge came from, so that's great. Very family-friendly.
