"In New York City, magic controls everything. But the power of magic is fading. No one knows what is happening, except for Sydney--a new, rare magician with incredible power that has been unmatched in decades, and she may be the only person who is able to stop the darkness that is weakening the magic. But Sydney doesn't want to help the system --she wants to destroy it. Sydney comes from the House of Shadows, which controls the magic with the help of sacrifices from magicians"--Provided by publisher.

Loved this book. The pacing was spot on (I didn't find it too fast at all). Enjoyed the characters and world building. If you like Urban Fantasy give it a shot.

I lost interest in this book in the first a hundred pages. Like other users I thought it could have benefited a great deal if it was slower paced and did a better job establishing characters. I just didn't feel like the conflict was compelling enough neither was the world building. It just felt...shallow.

This was really a fun, creative book with good characters and an interesting plot. A journey into shadows. One of the better fantasy books that I've read recently.

I loved this book. It resonated so strongly with me. Couldn't stop reading (yes--it's very fast paced! but I think of it more as lean. no wasted scenes) and the big cast meant we saw a variety of strong women wielding power in a variety of ways. Howard didn't pull any punches with the plot, either; just because it's fast paced doesn't mean it's shallow--there is real grief and loss here.

A lot of potential in the story and characters but it would have benefitted from being paced a little slower, maybe over two books even.
