This is a powerful and sensitive illustrated biography of self-taught artist James Castle. Allen Say's gift for visual storytelling is a compelling medium for the history of James Castle, who was born deaf and relied on paper as means for communication. The book manages to convey through concise narrative and thoughtful illustrations the loneliness and frustrations of this artist who, although he had a family, experienced a tremendous amount of isolation. This book succeeds in communicating the need to value visual expression as much as verbal. While a great deal of Castle's work was lost or destroyed over the years, the remaining collected artwork is now curated and parts of it exhibited. For more information see http://jamescastle.com/

A beautifully told story of a self-taught artist.

Sometimes you come across a book that just blows you away. This is one of those. A biography about a deaf artist, told in words and pictures, drawn in the style of the subject artist. I can't speak highly enough about this work. Caldecott medal contender, absolutely.
