It is so wonderful to immerse yourself once again in a fictional world that you love and that you thought you'd never get to revisit (except on re-reads, of course). I had forgotten how much I love Philip Pullman's writing -- it's so clever and imaginative and so very, very British -- and it was really intriguing to jump back into the world of the His Dark Materials books at an earlier time than those books were set (baby Lyra!). I cannot wait to read the next book in this series.

plot - "fantasy" a gripping tale with a few ominous prophecies thrown in.

Returning to the world of Phillip Pullman is a treat. As a teen I devoured the Golden Compass and the rest of His Dark Materials, now having a chance to return and meet a new cast with glimpses of familiar characters was awesome. You instantly become connected to Malcolm, his adventurous and curious spirit, his innate goodness and sense of what is right and true. His adventure is not an easy one and he becomes a great new hero. I know this is a children's book, but as an adult I am hooked. Can't wait for what's next!

If you're a fan of Pullman's Golden Compass, you'll enjoy this return to the world of Dust and daemons set at the time of Lyra's birth. As always, Pullman writes beautifully, and though this tale unfolds slowly, it's the kind you'll savor.

This was the first book I'd read by Pullman. My favourite character is Malcolm. Such an inquisitive, bright little boy he is. I am looking forward to reading the second book. ☆☆☆☆☆ - Lyla

A wonderful prequel to His Dark Materials series. Makes me want to go back and re-read the other three.

This is set in the same universe as Pullman's much-beloved His Dark Materials series, but La Belle Sauvage (or, The Book of Dust) stands entirely on its own. The first part of the novel reads almost like an exciting spy thriller - full of deception, mystery, and the ever-looming threat of flood. The second part is where this book truly excels, though. The tone completely changes, the world becomes even more magical and improbable, and the true Odyssey-like adventure begins. This is a magnificent start to a brand-new trilogy, and I am hooked. (Michael Sheen narrates the audiobook, and it is fabulous!)

What a fantastic journey back into the fantastical world of Dust and Lyra and alethiometer!

That was well worth the wait and I'm so happy to be back and reading new stories about Lyra's world. This first volume of a new trilogy takes place 11 years before The Golden Compass, Lyra is a baby and our hero is 11 year old Malcolm. Malcolm leads an unassuming life working with his parents at the local pub until he becomes acquainted with baby Lyra, a spy, and the danger associated with that knowledge. Malcolm, another girl named Alice, and their daemons end up journeying with Lyra in the titular canoe after a flood and their journey and quest for sanctuary for Lyra is truly harrowing for kids their age and in the world that is happening around them. Some more adult material is included here but it still feels on par with the old child/early teen group of readers. I hope Lyra gets to hear this story in the next books, it is quite the tale and technically her first adventure.

Suffice to say if you enjoyed His Dark Materials, you'll enjoy this too.

The original His Dark Materials trilogy was fresh and thrilling as we learned about daemons, puzzled about Dust, and worried about Lyra during her adventures. While the protagonist Malcolm in this first book of the new prequel Dust trilogy is a likeable, doughty lad, his story is uninteresting and unfolds slowly. We already know this world and we know that baby Lyra will grow up safely to undertake more dangerous exploits so there is little tension. I got halfway through the book and decided not to finish it. A reminder that the book is written at the young adult level (12 - 15 ish), which was not a drawback for the original books, but really stood out in the simplistic narrative of this one.
